Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B spreads when blood, semen, or other body fluids from a person infected with the virus enter the body of a person who is not infected. This disease transmits by exposure to infected body fluids.
Symptoms are variable and include yellowing of the eyes, abdominal pain, and dark urine. Some people, especially children, do not have any symptoms. In chronic cases, liver failure, cancer, or scarring can occur. The condition often goes away on its own. Chronic patients require medication and possibly a liver transplant.
